Tell me something about yourself?

I am sure you must have heard these questions if you ever attended an Interview. If not then you must know this would be generally the first question in any interview. Are you one of those people who clear the written examination but get totally nervous for an interview because of the fear of rejection?Well, fret not, as we are here to cover all kinds of interview questions asked and suggest methods to answer them.

As we have already told you, always enter the room confidently with a smile on your face and try to follow the ideal dress code for an interview.(You can read more here in our previous post) Greet all the interviewers with a Good Morning, Namastey or anything appropriate. If there is a lady in the panel of interviewers, then you MUST greet her first. Look at everyone’s face while answering even if one of them has asked a question.

You apply for a job, clear the written exam and then study day and night about your field of study and the job you applied for hoping they would ask you something about that. But the first question that most candidates usually get asked in all interviews is – Tell me something about yourself or introduce yourself. This is the most important question of any interview and 90% times candidates face this question. While we are comfortable in talking about all other things, it becomes quite a task when you are asked to talk about yourself.

There is a system for answering this question and the most effective way is as follows:

1) Start by telling your Full name
2)Then tell about your Educational qualifications
3) The city you belong to
4)Your  Father’s name and profession
5) Your mother’s name and profession
6) Your hobbies and interest
7) Your strengths and weaknesses(if asked)

Important Note: Now here let us tell you the difference between hobbies and interest. They are not the same things!! While a hobby is something you do regularly in your free time, interests are what you would wish to do if you got time but do not do regularly.

A sample answer would be- Sir my name is Atul Sharma.I have pursued b.tech in civil engineering from Delhi College of Engineering with 83% marks.I did my schooling from Delhi public school.I belong to Delhi. My father’s name is Nikunj Sharma and He is working as an executive engineer at Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. My mother’s name is Shailja Sharma and she is a teacher at Vasant Vihar Academy. My hobbies are reading and listening Music. My interests are gardening and writing poetry. My strengths are Initiative to work independently, Adaptable to any kind of situation & positive attitude. My weakness is that when I am unable to do something correctly, I attempt it again and again.

Note: Here you can see that when you are telling about your weakness, tell it in a way that it is also a positive point in some way.Like if you do something again and again if not correct then this will be counted as a positive point.

Above is the ideal way to answer the question introduce yourself. If the interviewer already said your name like “XYZ” introduce yourself so you can skip 1st point. One must know good details about the city he/she belong, also the details about fathers profession, meaning of your name any famous personality with the same name …etc.Just know that the interviewer can form questions with the things you told him so must know everything in detail. If you are telling about your previous work experience then be sure to get more questions asked regarding that.

Always Remember: The above answer is just a sample, do not memorize it.An interview can make you nervous so it becomes quite easy for the interviewer to know if you are actually speaking or just speaking a memorized answer.Whatever you do, don’t lie about anything because the interviewer will know.If you are lying then make sure to sound genuine at least.
