How to Improve your English

Hello friends, Today’s article is about how can you improve your English speaking and writing skills. As you all know English is a global language and in today’s world, you need to be well-versed in the language.Almost all Government competitive exams test your English in some or the other way and if it is your weak point, you will lag behind in clearing those exams. If you too are one of those who consider English as your weak point, here in this article we are trying to elaborate a few ways in which you can definitely improve your English and score well.

But first, let me tell you that there are no short cuts to learning and becoming well-versed in the English language. There are no formulas or algorithms that can make you solve the problem and also you cannot just mug it up.But don’t worry, we are here to help you!!

Get hold of your basic Grammer

Time to take out your Wren & Martin folks!! If you didn’t buy this book in your school time, better buy it now.Or get any other book of basic grammar.I know you must be wondering why to get some basic school level book but getting competitive level books will never clear your basics. This is especially for all the candidates who didn’t study in English Medium schools and did their schooling from Hindi medium or State level boards.Without the basic and common understanding of English grammar, it is impossible to get a good score in any type of English paper.

Start working on your Vocabulary

You know sometimes you know what you want to say and you also know the rules of grammar but you don’t know what words to use in order to express yourself. This happens due to lack of vocabulary. In order to speak a language fluently or express yourself in that language, you need to possess the power of Vocab. Many competitive exams ask antonyms and synonyms in their exam and mugging up will not give results. You can cram new words all you want but you can never remember them until you know how they are used in a language. So try to learn new words every day and most importantly notice how they are used.

#bookadvice: You can buy the book- “Word Power made easy by Norman Lewis” It is a very helpful book which can help you increase your vocabulary in a very logical manner. You can get it easily at any store locally or online.

Don’t Forget the Spellings

Many of you may think that it is sufficient to be able to speak and read a language. But writing is equally important because you write a lot even after getting out of school.Today we have so many correction tools that sometimes we may ignore this part.As for competitive exams, knowing how to spell words correctly becomes all the more important because you have to write essay or letter in the descriptive papers or even for error detection questions, it is essential. You are not going to have spell check in the exam so your only way out is to actually learn to spell correctly.

Few other effective ways to improve your spellings are:

Use mnemonics-Remembering can sometimes be difficult. But when you give meaning to that info, it becomes easier to learn. Mnemonic devices turn information into a sentence, a rhyme, picture or anything else that’s easier to remember.

Learn commonly misspelled words-There are a few words that often unintentionally get misspelled so you can just learn those confusing words!

  • across
  • basically
  • beginning
  • believe
  • embarrass

There are many other words but you may start with these and the rest you can just find on the web.

Read, Read and Read more

You must have a habit of reading a language in order to know it more deeply.First of all, you can’t learn the English language if you start with the motive to score well. You have to develop an interest in the subject in order to know it.Start by reading whatever you like.It can be a lifestyle or fashion magazine, the special Sunday paper or the most effective of all-A Novel.Novels from good writers and nonfiction books are quite useful for this purpose as they let you learn the correct use of certain phrases and words.Read different kinds of genres-romantic, fiction, mystery, etc.to learn a variety of new words.

Newspapers-The most important because they serve the dual purpose of raising your general awareness as well as vocabulary.

How to Improve your English

Now there are two kinds of newspapers-The Classy and The Massy

The classy ones are The Hindu, The Indian Express and the like. These newspaper consist only authentic news and their use of words can enrich your word bank to a great level. But beginners should start from the messy ones like the times of India and read what they like.

#Tips

  • Start watching a few English series and Hollywood movies on channels like HBO, Romedy Now, Zee Cafe, etc. and refrain from watching dubbed movies.Watch the ones with subtitles then we guarantee you will definitely learn a few new words and their appropriate use at the end of each episode of the series or movie.
  • Watch a few English news channels regularly like Times Now, NDTV 24×7, CNN IBN, BBC World news, India Today, etc.

If you follow these points regularly, you can definitely improve your English for competitive exams as well as in general.
